[THROWBACK] Conference : Toward Rapid Decarbonisation: Challenges, Priorities, and Innovations
On November 13, 2024, the event "Toward Rapid Decarbonisation: Challenges, Priorities, and Innovations" brought together experts to explore the challenges and solutions for decarbonisation in Vietnam, a critical issue as the country commits to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The companies in attendance formed an alliance to support this goal and offer complementary services to guide economic players.
Bureau Veritas Vietnam: Mastering Carbon Measurement and Regulatory Compliance
Bureau Veritas Vietnam presented the session titled "Navigating Carbon Measurement and Compliance in Vietnam’s Evolving Regulatory Landscape." Phong Huynh Thanh Nguyễn, a sustainability trainer, detailed:
- Current and upcoming regulations: local and international rules, particularly those expected by 2030, which will impose new compliance requirements for companies operating in Vietnam.
- Environmental labels and standards: Bureau Veritas assists companies in understanding and applying emerging labels and standards to enhance their responsible practices.
- Best practices: advice on practices to improve carbon performance, optimize reporting, and align with regulatory expectations.
VSSES: Driving Green Transformation with Renewable Energy
Bùi Ngọc Giao, Head of Customer Service and Marketing at VSSES, presented practical solutions to help companies harness renewable energy in his presentation titled "Driving Green Transformation in the Net-Zero Era":
- Adapting to new priorities: VSSES highlighted the key impact areas of the energy transition and ways to adjust business models to leverage solar and renewable energy.
- Energy efficiency management tools: tools to measure and manage the efficiency of renewable energy assets, such as solar panels, which directly contribute to emissions reduction.
- Monitoring and optimization: tracking and optimizing renewable energy assets ensure increased sustainability and cost reduction.
GoNetZero™: Accelerating the Path to Net Zero
Teo Han Yong, Head of GoNetZero™, discussed decarbonisation efforts in his presentation "Decarbonisation Now: Accelerating the Path to Net Zero," highlighting:
- Global commitment: more than 145 countries and 11,300 companies have set net-zero emission targets, a momentum increasingly impacting global supply chains.
- Supply chain pressures: the impact of the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, for example, could influence Vietnamese exports.
- Emission reduction solutions: GoNetZero™ offers solutions for emissions reduction, carbon credits, and renewable energy certificates (RECs), as demonstrated by their work with Epson SEA, which has achieved its goal of 100% renewable energy.
Conclusion: Alliances and Concrete Solutions for Accelerated Decarbonisation
The speakers from Bureau Veritas, GoNetZero™, and VSSES highlighted the challenges of decarbonisation and proposed practical approaches to support Vietnamese companies in their energy transition. Together, they underscore the importance of combining regulatory compliance, effective emissions management, and the adoption of renewable energies to make Vietnam a committed player in the fight against climate change.
